In 1976 I experienced my first rock festival at Knebworth Park. The Rolling Stones
supported by, among others, Lynyrd Skynyrd and watched by over 200,000 people.
The event made a considerable impact upon me.
Part of my attraction to festivals was an underlying fascination with the places they were
held and how the landscape and cycle of the day influenced their atmosphere. There was something intriguing about the festivals’ temporary presence in the landscape that contributed to their uniqueness as events.
I returned to Knebowrth in 2006 exactly thirty years to the day. Using small photos taken in 1976 I identified the spot on which I had spent that particular day. From here I repeated the images and filmed a notional performance by Lynyrd Skynyrd. On the anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s last ever UK performance in 1979 I photographed the site of the stage at regular intervals from sunrise to sunset. (Hats Off to Roy Harper)
Link to feature in The Drawbridge
Extending the project further I have begun documenting the sites of other famous 70s festivals that I did not attend including The Isle of Wight 1970 and Weeley 1971.
Hats Off to Roy Harper is being exhibited at Ikon Eastside 1 - 25 July Link
