The early years of my life were spent, during the 1960s, in the open Wiltshire countryside. Here my father was farm manager of a large area of Salisbury Plain sandwiched between two of the Army's practice ranges.
I now recognize that much my sense of place and visual sensibilities my attraction to the wide-open spaces of North America, machines in the landscape etc were formed during this time.
The Cross family moved from Wiltshire in 1971 and the landscape my father farmed has since been turned to army training purposes. In 2007 I revisted Upavon to make two video works - Aerodrome and Barn - and I have been returning on a regular basis to take photographs. I have also been working in response to photographs taken by my father from as early as when I was as young as only six months old.
