Barn 2007

Digital video, with audio, 9:30 mins

The film consists of four short sequences each repeating the same view of the barn. Each sequence, however, is accompanied by a different audio track recorded at the same location at different times. These audio tracks include the sound of helicopters, tanks, gun fire and bird song.

The early years of my life were spent, during the 1960s, in the open Wiltshire countryside. Here my father was farm manager of a large area of Salisbury Plain sandwiched between two of the Army's practice ranges.

Returning in 2007 to film the area - that is now used from army training - from a glider, I discovered that a temporary barn structure erected by my father and his colleagues in 1968 was still standing. The barn became the subject of a second film as well as photographs. After over twenty years of non-use the Army finally dismantled the structure; curiously forty years almost to the day that it was built.
